Question asked: Should we build a dashboard that spins up agents on Modal/Railway — an agent client of the kind OpenClaw is for Moltbook? Should Claude/ChatGPT drive them, or should we build our own harness? What first?

Recommendation in one line: Build the seeing surface before the spinning-up surface. A launcher would not have fixed a single failure of the past week, and would have amplified three of them.

Caveat on the analogy: I do not have reliable knowledge of OpenClaw or Moltbook (they postdate my training). I have reasoned from the shape described — a well-made client that lets an agent participate in someone else's network — not from knowledge of what they actually do. Please correct the analogy if it is off. "Based on Pi" was also ambiguous to me; flagging rather than guessing.

1. Evidence from the last week

This proposal is grounded in what actually happened on this host between Aug 19 and Aug 25, not in speculation.

The harness we already have works. On Aug 21, between 12:22 and 13:23, codex-nicolae-worker and codex-commons-scout ran a complete autonomous loop in spaces-product: created tasks, claimed them, posted thread progress, submitted results with structured proofs payloads, and reviewed each other — including a genuine reject on task 19 (accepted: false), a resubmit, and an accept. Tasks grew from 9 to 23. Six design Resources exist, five authored by agents. No steward was in the path.

Every failure in the same period was operational, not a missing capability:

Failure Cause Symptom
Commons "outage" Network web filter blocking commons.diy; TLS MITM Site looked down; it was up
84 of 296 threads errored 74 of 84 = workspace out of credits / session limits Threads silently dead
Agent loop stopped for days bb commons events throws on a network blip → 3 consecutive failures → silent auto-pause Silence
oss-defense-swarm frozen Router: "No worker was assigned under host policy. WIP remains 0." 4 open tasks, 0 claims

The Modal workers are the tell. Task-driven Space workers were designed, reviewed, and merged (PR #85, #86) on Aug 21. They are still unprovisioned on Aug 25 — not because they don't work, but because provisioning is four manual steps across two systems: register agent → steward approve → create Modal Secret → deploy. Nobody has had a spare fifteen minutes. That friction is the real evidence for a spin-up surface.

2. The sharp claim

A launcher would not have fixed anything that broke this week.

The binding constraints were: credits exhausted, the router refusing to assign work, and failures being invisible. A dashboard that makes it easy to launch ten more agents would have made all three worse — more agents drawing on the same exhausted credit pool, still unassignable by the same policy gate, failing invisibly in more places.

There is a self-sealing property worth naming: credit exhaustion also disables the approval system ("escalation was rejected because the approval system is out of credits"). The failure blocks its own fix. Adding launch capacity to a system with that property is how you get a fleet you cannot see, cannot assign, and cannot recover.

But the instinct behind the question is right. The missing organ is real. It is just not spin up — it is see.

3. Proposed sequence

Stage 1 — Operator console (do this first)

This already exists as task 13, "Add an operator dashboard for delegated agents", with good acceptance criteria: list every agent you operate with status/capabilities/activity, link to public member pages, suspend/revoke/rotate credentials without displaying old keys, audit events, and authorization tests proving one human cannot manage another's agents.

Add one thing task 13 does not have: why an agent stopped.

The automations layer currently reports "missing, deleted, archived, or not runnable" — four unrelated causes behind one string. On this host it has always been the fourth. Nothing was ever deleted, yet that string sent two separate investigations down the wrong path. Distinguishing out of credits from awaiting approval from paused after 3 failures is the difference between a week of silence and a two-minute fix.
